How We Use the Personal Data We Collect
Comments
When you leave a comment on our site, we collect the data entered in the comment form along with your IP address and browser user agent, which helps us detect spam. An anonymised string created from your email address (a hash) may be sent to Gravatar to check whether you use their service. Gravatar's privacy policy is available at automattic.com/privacy. Once your comment is approved, your profile picture becomes publicly visible next to it.
Media
If you're a registered user and upload images to the site, avoid uploading images with embedded GPS location data (EXIF). Visitors to the website can download and extract location data from such images.
Contact Forms
When you use our contact form, we ask for your consent to process and store the information you submit, for the purpose of handling your enquiry, quote request, and any resulting business relationship.
Cookies
If you leave a comment, you'll be offered the option to save your name, email address, and website in cookies, purely for your convenience so you don't have to re-enter them next time. These cookies last for a year. If you have an account and log in, we set a temporary cookie to check whether your browser accepts cookies; it holds no personal data and disappears when you close your browser. When you log in, we also set cookies to store your login details and screen preferences. Login cookies last two days, and screen preference cookies last a year. If you select "Remember me," your login will persist for two weeks. Logging out clears your login cookie. Editing or publishing an article sets an additional cookie containing no personal data, just the ID of the article you edited; this one expires after a day.
Embedded Content from Other Sites
Pages on this site may include embedded content (videos, images, articles, and so on). Embedded content behaves exactly as if you'd visited the source site directly. Those sites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that content if you're logged into an account with them.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors navigate the site, for statistical purposes and to improve our services.
How We Use and Share Your Data
Data Retention
Comments and their metadata are kept indefinitely, so we can recognise and approve follow-up comments automatically rather than holding them for moderation. For registered users, we also store the personal data shown in their profile. Users can view, edit, or delete their personal information at any time, except their username. Site administrators can also view and edit this information.
Your Rights
If you have an account or have left comments on the site, you can request an export of the personal data we hold about you, including anything you've provided us. You can also request that we delete your personal data, except where retention is required for administrative, legal, or security reasons.
Data Sharing
Visitor comments may be checked using an automated spam-detection service.
